After a recent snowfall, we read The Snowy Day, following along with the little boy as he awakens to a blanket of snow coating his neighborhood. He makes tracks in the snow: pointing his feet in and then out, adding a stick to make additional tracks. He watches the big kids have a snowball fight. The book captures the wonder and enjoyment children experience in a winter snowscape.
After reading we bundled up and headed outside – for our own track making, stick dragging, and snowball throwing.
Afterwards it was back inside, to re-read the book with mugs of hot cocoa warming us up. Maybe next time I’ll let them bring in a snowball in their pocket (like they did in the book) to see what happens!
