Setting Up the Guess Bags
I gathered up several items that remind us of summer, brown paper bags, and a bandana. I set the bags up outside with one object in each bag, and then brought the kids outside to play! I covered their eyes with the bandana, and they reached inside the bag, felt the objects inside, and guessed what each object was.
I selected items that remind us of summer:
- seashells and rocks from the beach
- popsicle sticks
- marshmallows (we use these for s’mores in the summer!)
As they reached in and felt the items, we talked about what they felt. First I asked them to describe what they felt, and then I asked leading questions, such as: was it hard or soft? rough or smooth? big or small? Did they feel bumps or ridges? Did it feel the same all over?
With some things, they guessed right away, and with others we talked through more questions.
You might want to try sand, sidewalk chalk, or freshly cut grass (or, if you’re also experiencing a heat wave, dried and yellowed grass!). There are lots of fun things to try!
