Create an arctic world for your kids, even in the middle of summer, with this pretend play idea. We used ice cubes for a chill, and shaving cream became our snow. We added in some animal figures, and this small world play set up kept my preschooler happily playing for a long time!
“Small World” play is just a fancy way of saying a pretend play set up. We usually set them up in a plastic container, or a water table, or on top of a small table or mat.

- Shaving cream
- Polar bears and other arctic animals (we used these polar bears and this Safari Ltd Arctic TOOB)
- water table (or tub or large plastic container)
We started out with the water in the water table. Then we decided where to put the snow, and sprayed shaving cream piles as large snow banks. We got out the ice, and my preschooler placed it into the water table.
He grabbed the polar bears, and started playing! They played in the “snow”, in the ice, in the water.
Our water table has 2 levels, so he was able to put some ice and shaving cream outside of the water. Although they only stayed separate for probably the first two minutes of his play!
