When my oldest child was leaving the baby stage, and progressing into toddlerhood, my husband and I had to decide which approach to discipline fit our family best. I had read about so many approaches, many of which were contradictory, and many of which just didn’t feel right for us. I heard the phrase “positive guidance,” and liked how it sounded, and I thought it seemed to embody our natural inclinations, but from what I was reading, it seemed a bit unclear as to how it actually worked.
And then I found Amanda Morgan, at Not Just Cute. Amanda’s ebook Parenting With Positive Guidance, is a must read. It clearly details what positive guidance is, the “toolbox” for parents to use to encourage positive behavior, and finally how families can tailor it to their own situation. Her blog is also full of fabulous resources for postiive guidance (like this, this, and this).
One of my favorite aspects of the philosophy Amanda outlines is that the goal is to build your child’s internal discipline. That you are not trying to exert your own control over your child as much as you are trying to help your child develop his or her own self-control. I agree with this, as I think that my children conforming to my wishes because they know I am in control will not help them as much as if they control their behavior motivated by their internal desires.
Amanda has also developed an online course, Parenting With Positive Tools: Building Discipline From The Inside Out. Registration is open for this course now until classes begin September 12, 2012. I am excited to take this class, and I would encourage anyone to join us!
The course is 4 weeks long, and about an hour a week. The hour is broken down into 3-4 segments, so you can watch each hour all at once or break it up throughout the week. (I’ll be in the throughout the week category!). There will also be other goodies- printable, and discussions, and links to other resources. And when you sign up you will receive 2 ebooks: Parenting with Positive Guidance and Patience for Parenting.
The course is $123, with a discount of $25 for anyone who agrees to take the course with a partner. Yep, that’s right. She is so awesome that she is letting 2 people who take it together pay LESS than the price of one person alone.
The links to the course in this post and on the sidebar are affiliate links. I am proud to be an affiliate and wholeheartedly recommend the course.
